This is a quick-reference guide for matching tire sizes to wheel sizes on the first generation FT86 platform (2013-2020 Subaru BRZ ZC6, Scion FR-S ZN6, Toyota 86 ZN6). For the second-generation (2022+) see the ZN8/ZD8 Wheel and Tire Cheatsheet. For detailed wheel fitment information, see the BRZ, FR-S, or Toyota 86 wheel guides. For tire diameter tolerance and compatibility details, see the FT86 tire guide.

Popular Proven Setups
Daily Driver
- 17x8” +40 - 225/45R17 - The easy button “OEM+”. Fills out the fender gap with zero rubbing concerns. Highly recommended for daily use.
- 18x8.5” +40 - 235/40R18 - The widest “no hassle” +1 street option. Offers a significant visual upgrade and fits on stock height/camber.
- 18x8.0” +40 to +45 - 225/40R18 - A conservative 18-inch choice, offering a visual statement without compromising steering lock or comfort.
- 17x7.5” +40 to +48 - 215/45R17 - Conservative upgrade for some vehicles equipped with factory 17x7. Retains a comfortable sidewall profile while accommodating the OEM tire size.
Spirited Road and Track Performance
- 17x9” +35 - 255/40R17 - Higher offset limits need for front spacer providing superior inner strut clearance. Requires at least -2.0° camber.
- 17x9.5” +40 - 255/40R17 - Higher offset limits need for front spacer providing superior inner strut clearance. Requires at least -2.5° camber.
- 18x9.5” +40 - 255/35R18 - Achieves maximum aesthetic “flushness” and width. Requires coilovers and at least -2.5° camber. Rear fender work may be necessary for full suspension articulation clearance.
Track / Time Attack
- 17x9.5” +40 - 255/40R17 - Coilovers of appropriate diameter (read: smaller) required and at least -2.5° camber.
- 18x10” +35 to +45 - 265/35R18 - Smaller coilover diameter required. Front spacer required to clear suspension and at least -3.0° camber. Rear fender modifications required.
- 17x10” +35 to +45 - 255/40R17 - Smaller coilover diameter required. Front spacer required to clear suspension and at least -2.5° camber. Rear fender modifications required.
Winter
- 16x7” +45 - 205/55R16 - Maximum Pothole and Snow Compliance if not equipped with OE Brembo brakes. Verify brake caliper clearance before purchase.
Main OEM Considerations
Performance Package SACHS Struts: Cars equipped with the Performance Package / TRD SACHS dampers have a larger strut body that can make contact with the inner part of the wheel, particularly when running wider wheels with higher offsets. This typically requires a minimum 5mm spacer up front or choosing a wheel with a lower offset eliminating the need for spacers entirely.
OE Brembo Calipers: The Performance Package, BRZ tS, and certain TRD editions came equipped with larger Brembo brake calipers. While many 17” and all 18” aftermarket wheels can clear these brakes, fitment can be tight. Always verify brake caliper clearance before purchasing wheels, especially with 17” diameters. Note that 16” wheels will NOT clear Brembo calipers.
Front Inner Fender Liner and Tie Rod Clearance: The stock FT86 has approximately 20mm to 25mm of available space between the OEM wheel/tire and the front spring perch. With aggressive wheel widths (9” and wider) combined with lower offsets and lowered suspension, the inner edge of the tire can contact the fender or the inner tie rod at full steering lock. This is most common with 9.5J and wider wheels. Solutions include running a small spacer (3-5mm), slightly narrower tires, adjusting ride height, or installing steering rack limiters to restrict steering angle (with the trade-off of a slightly larger turning radius).
Outer Fender Clearance: The multi-link rear suspension of the FT86 exhibits natural negative camber gain under compression or lowering which can help avoid fender contact. This, however, will not prevent rubber on metal or worse for a very aggressive fitment. As a general rule, the combination of wheel width wider than 9” and offset lower than +35 is a poke fitment and not a flush fitment. These fitments will require extra negative camber and/or fender modifications.
Power Output: The FT86 platform’s factory power can be adequately managed by 245mm tires. If you are running the car stock or lightly modified there can be such a thing as too wide of a tire to extract the full performance of your vehicle’s abilities.

Remember: Actual fitment varies based on wheel design (spoke profile, barrel shape), suspension setup, ride height, camber, and fender and fender liner condition. Always verify fitment for your specific combination before purchasing.
